In an inspiring visit to Karonga, Willard Phinifolo, one of Malawi’s most notable young climate leaders, engaged with students and teachers participating in the ICEREF project. Through interactive sessions with Climate Champion Clubs across three schools, Willard discussed practical approaches to addressing climate change and guided students on implementing their ICEREF project ideas. Each school is now gearing up to launch their climate action plans, starting with tree planting initiatives that the ICEREF team will support and participate in.

Willard’s visit brought not only practical knowledge but also new opportunities for schools to secure further support for their environmental initiatives. He introduced the students to the 1 Million Youth Action Challenge (1MYAC), a program that enables schools to apply for resources to sustain their climate interventions beyond the ICEREF project’s one-year timeline. By engaging in 1MYAC, students have the chance to develop their climate projects, creating long-lasting impact within their communities.

Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to work with the students, Willard praised the ICEREF team’s commitment and coordination, noting that such high levels of school engagement are uncommon in similar initiatives. He highlighted the alignment of ICEREF’s objectives with those of 1MYAC, making the program a worthy initiative for broader support. The enthusiasm from the schools, he added, was remarkable and underscored the collective commitment to tackling climate issues at the grassroots level.

Willard’s visit leaves a legacy of knowledge, inspiration, and new opportunities for Malawian students. Through ICEREF’s vision and with leaders like Willard at the forefront, these young Climate Champions are equipped to create lasting change for a resilient future in Malawi.

Together, we are planting the seeds for a greener, more sustainable tomorrow.
