In a moment of immense pride and inspiration, Her Excellency Esme Chombo, the Malawi Ambassador to the United States, had the privilege of meeting with the dynamic members of the 2023 Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) cohort from Malawi. The gathering took place at the prestigious Omni Hotels and Resorts, where Ambassador Chombo shared her wisdom and encouraged each and every young fellow to be catalysts for positive change.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, a flagship program of the U.S. Department of State, annually brings together emerging African leaders from various countries to engage in a six-week leadership training program in the United States. Among the esteemed group of young fellows representing Malawi was our very own Executive Director, Robert Mhango, whose dedication to the cause of empowering youth has been truly exemplary.

Ambassador Chombo’s words resonated deeply with the attendees as she spoke about the challenges and opportunities facing Malawi and the African continent as a whole. She highlighted the critical role that young leaders play in driving socio-economic development, promoting good governance, and addressing pressing issues such as climate change, healthcare, and education.

One of the highlights of the event was a memorable photograph capturing Ambassador Chombo alongside Robert Mhango, our Executive Director. His participation in the Fellowship exemplified the dedication of our organization, which has long been committed to nurturing young talent and empowering them to become agents of positive change.

Ambassador Chombo’s message was clear and resonant: each member of the 2023 MWF cohort possesses the power to make a real difference in Malawi and beyond. She encouraged them to harness the knowledge and experiences gained during the Fellowship to drive progress, foster innovation, and contribute to the betterment of their communities.
